March 2012

SPRINGTIME is here!

In Communication Arts this month, we have read a story called Squirrel Park. This story is about a young boy who is trying to save an old tree in his town. He creates a park to surround the tree.  The students this week have created their own designs for a park.  These will be on display for the next couple of weeks outside our classroom.  We have also reviewed plural nouns and the rules for making them plural.

In our phonics lessons we have been reviewing short vowel sounds.

In our Writing lessons, we practiced writing linear writing. Next week we will learn to write webbed writing.

In Math, we have practiced the partial sums method.   This method teaches students to add each place value- hundreds, tens and then ones. Then students will add altogether to complete the problem.  This might be a new concept for your family.  Please help your child practice at home.

In Social Studies, we have completed our Regions unit.  We have begun a unit about Missouri!  We will study about the states that surround Missouri and the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers. We will also practice reading a map grid!

If you would like to volunteer in our classroom, fill out an application, schedule an interview, then let us know when you will be able to join the fun!
